Design: This contemporary residence was designed to fit within the allowed buildable area on a newly-created urban infill ‘flagpole’ lot. Careful organization lead to an efficient & compact floor plan, with a sense of expansion. The simple yet powerful roof form expresses the interior arrangement, while responding to the site’s unique conditions. This single-plane roof starts low at the north over the bedrooms, then rises gently towards the south. At its tallest over the generous Great Room, the roof accommodates tall apertures that open up to views of tall trees, and to the sun’s arc across the southern sky. An opposing angled roof playfully celebrates the main entry, and will extend to shelter a future carport. The inviting wood-clad porch leads into an entry area which forms a hub between the private bedroom wing, and the Great Room. This tall volume encompasses the kitchen, dining, and the living area, anchored by a corner fireplace. Wide patio doors lead to patios, and the surrounding garden. The main bedroom includes a private back porch facing the garden, and its bathroom is illuminated with a skylight over the glass & tile shower.
